We visited on a Saturday morning, just before the lunch rush. Our curiosity about the buzz was palpable. Breakfast can make or break a restaurant. Unlike dim lighting or cocktail magic, morning fare reveals true culinary skill.

If you enjoy literature, the name Colette likely resonates with you. Named after iconic French author Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, this restaurant honors a woman known for celebrating sensuality and independence in her work.

Colette's writings often revolved around themes of food and Parisian elegance—echoing the spirit of this Mellieħa brasserie. Whether by design or coincidence, it stands as a fitting tribute to the author. Like her, the restaurant exudes quiet confidence, stylishness, and unmistakable French flair.
What’s on the Menu at Colette in Mellieħa?
Colette boasts a comprehensive menu that includes Soupe de Poisson, Burgundy Snails, Linguini with Crab Provençale, and a delectable Chateaubriand. True to its French bistro roots, the menu expertly balances comfort and classic refinement.

You can indulge in dishes like Steak au Poivre, share a Whole Roast Chicken, or enjoy a Charcuterie Board paired with a glass of Burgundy. The wine and cocktail list is equally impressive, featuring a French influence with hints of Italian and a twist of gin.
However, our focus was breakfast, served until noon—surprisingly diverse for a brasserie. Choices ranged from Croque Madame and Eggs Florentine to Omelettes and French Toast. And, of course, there’s the favorite: Avocado on Toast.

What’s the Best Breakfast at Colette?
We decided to sample a few items between the two of us:
French Toast

Balade en Provence cocktail (because mornings should be treated like a special occasion)
First, we enjoyed the French Toast. It arrived as if taken directly from a Parisian patisserie—thick slices of brioche, soft inside and golden outside, lightly caramelized for a perfect texture.

Generously topped with sliced banana and drizzled with Maltese honey, it delivered warmth and sweetness without being overwhelming. The dish strikes a beautiful balance—rich yet restrained, indulgent yet not excessive. It’s definitely worth returning for.
Next up was the Omelette Parisienne, which proved to be another highlight. This was no ordinary omelette; it was a beautifully folded creation, creamy inside and finished with Gruyère cheese, lending a mellow, nutty flavor.

The Eggs Florentine received equal praise. Poached eggs rested on a bed of wilted spinach, topped with a blanket of zesty hollandaise sauce. One egg was perfectly executed, while the other was nearly there. Yet the flavors harmonized beautifully.

The sauce's acidity cut through the richness, while the spinach added freshness. It was a well-composed dish, light enough for brunch yet hearty enough to kickstart the day.
To balance out our meal, we opted for the Fruit Compote. Generally overlooked in brunch menus, this one stood out. It featured a vibrant mix of seasonal fruits that were fresh and thoughtfully prepared—not just a scoop from a catering tub.

What About Drinks? Is the Cocktail List Worth Trying?
Charlene opted for the Balade en Provence, a refreshing non-alcoholic cocktail made with lavender syrup, apple juice, lime, and elderflower soda. This drink is aromatic and floral, striking a beautiful balance without being overly sweet. It felt like a breath of spring.

Is Colette the Best Breakfast Spot in Malta?
It certainly makes a strong case for that title. Colette manages to be stylish without intimidation, comforting without predictability, and thoroughly French without any forced charm.

The attentive staff strikes a perfect balance between helpfulness and space. The restaurant's design is well-thought-out, and they follow a chef-led philosophy that guarantees quality and care in each dish.
As we left, we were already planning our next visit—perhaps to try the Duck Confit or something special from the weekday lunch “Formule.” For now, we proudly declare it a top contender for Best Brunch in Malta and a real gem in the Mellieħa dining scene.
